People who are diagnosed with cancer early due to routine screenings and treated are more likely to survive the disease. During cancer survivor month, we stand together with survivors and encourage everyone to receive their recommended screenings.
Cervical cancer caught at the precancerous stage on a Pap smear has a nearly 100% survival rate. It is recommended that women start receiving Pap smear screenings at age 21.
Women diagnosed with breast cancer in its early, localized stages have a 99% 5 year survival rate. For women of low to average risk, mammograms are recommended every 1-2 years starting at age 45.
